At present I am Director of Education for Global Spirit Ed and Visiting Professor at Sunderland University. Previously I held the position of Head of the International Centre for Educational Enhancement at the University of Bolton. This position was combined with my ongoing role as Director of Education for Kunskapsskolan (UK/USA). At the core of my work and moral purpose is the belief that when we set challenging goals and build authentic relationships with young people, they thrive and achieve. To do this we have to recognise that all students are different and therefore we have to personalise the offer we make them. We also have to develop agency so they have the intrinsic motivation to take charge of their learning and develop the skills to be resilient and creative decent human beings.
However I am also a pragmatist and know that to achieve these lofty goals we have to have a consistent pedagogy and build tools and models of teaching and learning that research shows are effective. However my recent work has been about how we then build the instructional leadership and school development/improvement strategies to ensure implementation is effective and sustained. This is summarised in the Global Spirit Ed Impact Strategy.
So after over 30 years of leading schools myself, my role over the last 10 years has been supporting a range of schools in a a range of countries to achieve these ambitions and goals. I act as a thought partner and coach and my aim is to help build capacity in the school so their work is sustained.
